Are you ready to celebrate Earth Day 2023 in a big way? The global event that started in 1970 has now become one of the most significant movements for environmental awareness and action.

“The Earth Day 2023 theme is focused on engaging the more than 1 billion people, governments, institutions, and businesses who participate in Earth Day to recognize our collective responsibility and to help accelerate the transition to an equitable, prosperous green economy for all.” - earthday.org

Explore environmental Commonplaces

One of the main things our customers use our platform for is to drive forward awesome environmental schemes. We're talking about everything from green infrastructure to renewable energy, and we're constantly blown away by the innovative projects we see. In fact, there are so many fantastic climate initiatives happening right now that we could spend all day talking about them. But we know you're busy, so we've handpicked a few notable ones to share with you below

  • Haringey’s Meadows Pilot project: The London Borough of Haringey is assessing the way they manage grass in parks and at highway verges to collect evidence of the climate, ecological and social benefits of creating and extending local ‘nature recovery zones’.  We are creating new meadows and would like local people to help to identify new areas!
  • Historic Buildings Carbon Reduction and Climate Resilience Challenge: The City of London is launching the Historic Building Carbon Reduction and Climate Resilience Challenge to reduce carbon emissions and adapt to climate change in the Square Mile. The challenge aims to gather information and insights from those involved in historic buildings in the City, including owners, tenants, architects, developers, and contractors, to identify effective solutions that protect and enhance the value of these heritage assets. The challenge is part of the City of London Corporation's Climate Action Strategy, which aims for a net-zero carbon Square Mile by 2040.
  • Flow Country Proposals: The Flow Country is a vast expanse of peatland in Caithness and Sutherland and is currently being nominated for UNESCO World Heritage status for its incredible blanket bog landscape and the biodiversity it holds. Utilising Commonplace, the community is leaving feedback to help make that a reality!
  • The Surrey EV Chargepoint Interactive Map: With the number of electric vehicles growing in Surrey, the council are currently placing new public charging stations all over the county. If residents can’t charge at home, all they have to do is leave a pin on the map.

A word on Commonplace’s green credentials

At our company, we believe that technology can be a powerful tool in the fight against climate change. But we also know that we need to take responsibility for our own carbon footprint. That's why we've taken some crucial steps to reduce our impact on the environment.

Firstly, we've introduced flexible working to cut down on the carbon emissions generated by commuting. Many of our team members love staying active by cycling or walking to work, and we're proud to say that not a single one of our employees uses a personal vehicle to get to the office. We are also a BCorp, which means that we meet high standards of social and environmental performance, transparency, and accountability.

Secondly, as a digital business, we're already ahead of the game when it comes to limiting our carbon footprint. The majority of our supply chain is digital, which means we don't generate unnecessary emissions from shipping or transportation.

At our company, we know that every small step can make a big difference. And we're proud to be doing our part to create a more sustainable future.

In conclusion, Earth Day 2023 is a reminder of the urgent need to take action towards creating a sustainable future. At Commonplace, we recognize that our customers and their communities are at the forefront of this movement. We are committed to supporting their efforts in driving forward awesome environmental schemes, from green infrastructure to renewable energy, through our platform's tools and resources.

Our customers' passion and dedication to creating sustainable changes in their neighbourhoods constantly inspire us. Through our platform, they can engage with their communities and collect feedback to make informed decisions about sustainability initiatives.
